I�m a Twitter enthusiast. I use it on a daily basis to both, connect with other like-minded people out there and promote my business to those who might benefit from working with me. Even though I use other social media sites as well, I still find Twitter the most powerful tool out there for those who market to businesses.

If you use Twitter daily like me, you might as well start using some of the smart tools and resources to get the most out of your time.

1. Hashtags
Hashtags or �#� help group tweets within the same topic. They�re great if you�re looking to promote your event or connect with audience interested in specific theme. For example, you can use hashtag #quote when posting a quote and quote lovers will find it way easier. As a brand strategist I like to use hashtags like #brand, #branding, #strategy, #MagneticBrand etc. You can also use hashtags mentioning brands #coke, #starbucks; places #Hilton, #Toronto; hobbies #swimming #blog; events, or anything else. You can search for a specific hashtag to connect with people with similar interests to yours.

2. Tweet Chat
Tweet chat is a great way to find other people who talk about topics that interest you and build lasting relationships. There are dozens of tweet chats running almost simultaneously. Simply find your favorite, ask about the schedule and enjoy. Some of my favorite: #leadfromwithin, #bizforum, #smallbizchat. Share your favorite tweet chat in the comment section below.

3. @ (�AT�) Messages
Connect with others out there by sending them a public tweet. Compliment them for something they recently did, whether it�s a blog post, book or event; share your insight or feedback, answer their question or recommend a great resource. AT messages are your ticket to getting noticed on this crowded network and building relationships that make a difference in your business.

4. Retweets (RT)
This is yet another great tool to help you both, share great content and gain attention of people you�d like to connect with. With over 20K twitter followers it�s very hard (and almost impossible) for me to stay in touch with everyone personally, but trust me, when people retweet my stuff, they get my attention. I usually check their profiles, mention them in my own tweets, send them a quick helpful tip or idea, or even add them to one of my lists. I believe many out there do it similarly. writingIf you want to work online, you’ve probably run into many philosophies about niche marketing. A niche is a narrowly focused, highly defined subject. When you write for a niche, your writing can be very deep, but it cannot be broad. For instance, sports is not a niche. Tennis is not even a niche. But if you wanted to write about learning to play tennis after the age 50, you have a niche. Another great niche might be how to teach your young child how to play great tennis.

Many writers have the wrong idea about niches. As writers, we tend to go for the scoop. We seek the unusual story and the odd angle no one has ever used before. We writers cross article ideas off the list as soon as we see other people writing about them.

After all, in the ink-on-paper world, the fastest way to get a rejection is to propose an article on a subject that a competitive publication recently wrote about. If you’re writing for a magazine or newspaper, a very unusual, one-of-a-kind story can be an easy sale.

Internet marketing does not work like that.

When you write for online sources, your work can be deep, but it has to be narrow. The Internet has become the medium for specialists. It’s the best place to get information on how to grow roses in the tropics or make your own yogurt or learn about the symptoms of Brugada’s disease.

The risk in focusing so sharply on a specific subject is that it is much easier to miss the mark than to hit it.

A good writer is looking for readers and a good online writer is looking for customers. So online writers need to become marketers in terms of finding their niches.

Most online marketers research niches to find traffic before they embark on projects. The idea is that you don’t want to venture into a niche where there isn’t already at least some conversation and activity going on.

That’s right, online marketers want to find competition in their niches of choice, because competition means there is already interest, buzz, and business in that sector. Continue reading »

writingEveryone is an expert at something.  Whatever product or service you provide in your business is your area of expertise.  Writing articles about what you are an expert at and distributing those articles online through various article submission directories is a valuable marketing strategy called Article Marketing.

How will writing and submitting articles help your business?

Here’s how it works.  You will:

Gain more exposure - When you write an article and submit it to various article directories it will be posted online for anyone to read.  Surfers find your articles when they type related keywords into search engines to find what they’re looking for.

Generate more traffic to your site - You will create a ‘resource box’ that is included at the end of each article you submit.  The resource box is a short bio about you, the author, with a link to your website.  When someone reads your article and wants to find out more about you, they will click thru the article resource box at the end of your article & will be taken to your website.

Build trust - When you provide value to the reader by sharing information on your expertise through your articles, you gain their confidence in you, your products and services.

Grow your list - Make sure you have a ‘call to action’ in your resource box and a sign up form on your site to capture names and email addresses of those who visit.  Offer a free report or a subscription to a newsletter that visitors can sign up for.

Boost business - When you build your market reach, name recognition and credibility, an increase in business is sure to follow.

Remember, no sales pitches.  The directories are looking for content-rich articles of about 400-750 words.  The only place you can promote yourself is within the resource box.

rejectedI constantly receive� queries from disgruntled individuals that feel an urge to request an explanation as to why their masterpiece of heavenly prose was cold-heartedly rejected by me. How stupid of me to fail to see the world changing implications of such a callous act. As a matter of fact, I distinctly recall all of the 500,000 or so rejected articles and the precise reasons why they were rejected.

I do understand that any individual that submits an article in good faith has every reason to expect� my automatic approval. Unfortunately, in the real world of article directory administration, not everyone is working towards a common goal. Far too many so called authors are only in it for themselves and are more than capable of� submitting loads of useless drivel.

In order to maintain a relatively high quality of articles in the article directory database, articles that are somewhat suspect are cut as soon as I notice� any hint of deceptive intent.� Normally, my decision to accept or reject an article is made within a time frame that ranges from� a split second to a maximum of 20 seconds.

If I catch any errors in spelling, title case, grammar, punctuation, word count, plagiarism, advertising, self promotion, embedded links, hard breaks, encoding, PLR, spinning,� duplicate content…to name a few….your article will be rejected! Trying to sneak extra links into the resource box will also get your article axed ( just remembered that one).

Submitting identical articles under a different title will get your article rejected and your account terminated. Creating multiple accounts under different names and email addresses in order to submit multiple copies of the same content will really piss me off and cancel anything and everything that I can find that even remotely has anything to do with you.  PagerankAre you trying to figure out where to submit articles? It is a common misconception that you should only submit to websites with high PageRank.

Usually the people who ask this question have either received faulty advice from their SEO guy, or they have misunderstood the purpose and meaning of PageRank.

Let’s clear this myth up and start at the beginning-what is PageRank?

PageRank (PR) is a link and web page analysis tool developed by Google. The ranking goes from 0 to 10, with 10 being the best. Google says that they use PageRank as “an indicator of an individual page’s value.” (quote from Google’s corporate website)

When Google is evaluating the value of a web page in determining where to place it in the rankings, it looks at both quantity and quality of links. So, a link from an authority site would have more weight than a link from a smaller website.

Some website owners make the mistake of thinking that if a website’s “importance” impacts the value of a link from that site, then you should therefore only seek backlinks from websites of high authority. I have even heard some website owners and misguided SEO ‘specialists’ say that backlinks from smaller websites are worthless. That is completely false.

PageRank Isn’t Everything

Notice that Google says that PageRank is “an indicator of an individual page’s value.” It is one of the  indicators that Google considers- not the only one. A website can have a lower PageRank than another site and still outrank it, and there is nothing that says that the top seated site is always the one with the highest PR.

To illustrate this, at the time I was writing this article I Googled the popular search term ‘lose weight fast’. The #1 ranking site had a PR3, the #2 site had a PR4, and the #3 site had a PR5. Continue reading »

FacebookGoogle has been pre-eminent in the search marketplace for a number of years, but recently many marketers, particularly internet marketers and affiliates have noticed that in its march towards world domination, it has aspired to eat up the competition, or failing that, clone the competition in order to force them out of the market. It has also treated with virtual comtempt people like affiliates who were for a long time the bread and butter of their paid advertising.

So, its not surprising that many marketers are turning their backs on Google for being both un-user friendly and too darned expensive, and are consistently looking for new sources of traffic for their websites and businesses. Website traffic is of course the lifeblood of all of us involved in marketing on the web, so obviously the cheaper the better. Google has simply priced most people, apart from big corporations, out of the PPC game, which is why SEO has become more fashionable, and so powerful again.

Google went on the rampage, changing its algorithms at will, and punishing even the most well behaved affiliates, who, after all, were doing no more than trying to get website traffic, and make a decent living. Now, even in some obscure niches, you could be paying $3.00 a click on Google, and Yahoo and Bing are not far behind. In the end, they only care about one thing - profit. Don’t be fooled by those early images of Google geeks cycling to work in sandals and woolly jumpers. They are now very shrewd, very savvy businessmen.

Sorry did I mention Facebook yet ? In the last 2 years Facebook has completely overtaken Google in terms of the number of users per day/week/month. And Google are Kacking themselves. Why? when one is a search engine, and the other is a social networking site? Because they both make money from selling advertising, and Facebook is now totally cleaning up in terms of what it can offer marketers. It probably didn’t even realise its own potential when it first started, but people like you and I, internet marketers, looking for traffic, have realised very quickly its full potential.

Apart from free/SEO traffic which I’ll go into another time, this is some of the best, most highly targeted website traffic you could ever dream of getting and it aint nowhere near as expensive as Google, or many other smaller search engines. And so far, although they clearly don’t like certain œmake money type products being pushed, and they have their own quirky rules, it can be the most amazing platform to advertise on , but also to get a lot, I mean shedloads of traffic to your website and business and that of course, if monitored and set up in the right way, should be able to deliver you a handsome return on investment. I have been very successful using Article Marketing to promote my online businesses, since early 2000…

I have written and distributed many articles that went on to generate sales in the five figures… But for the sake of the FTC, “Very few people will make this kind of money with Article Marketing…”

If you understand the “how and why” of writing great articles, perhaps you can generate more sales from your articles than I have from mine… But if you miss the point of this article, you are likely to never make any money at all with article marketing…

There Are Five Essential Elements of Successful Article Marketing:

1. Title - Many people suggest that you should put your top keywords at the front of your article title, but I don’t subscribe to that methodology. I do include my target keywords in the title, when I can, but an article that is well-optimized for the search engines is worthless if it does not get published… The #1 goal of your articles’ title is to get the article opened!! You must present a title that is going to get the attention of publishers and readers; you must present a title that is going to compel a person to at least open your article to see if they will want to read it…

2. Opening Paragraph - The title got your article opened, but now you need your reader to read the article… Tell your reader why they should keep reading your article and read it to its conclusion… Any reader who does not reach your website from your article is a “missed opportunity” to sell your stuff… Show people why it will be in their best interest to finish reading your article…

3. The Article Body - The article body must meet the promise of the Article Title and the opening paragraph… The article body must retain the interest of the reader to the last word… The article body must tell a story people want to read, and leave them wanting more… The article body must successfully carry the reader to your Author’s Resource Box… When finished reading, the reader must be happy to have read the article…

4. The Authors’ Resource Box - The Authors’ Resource Box needs to transition the reader from your article to your website, by offering a compelling call-to-action to get the reader to go to your website… Tell who you are, but don’t go overboard… People do not care who you are - they only care about what else you can do for them… Jeff Herring wrote a great article that elaborates a bit further on how to construct an effective Resource Box here (http://ezinearticles.com/?id=3624961)…

5. Your Landing Page - You should never try to sell your products or services in your Authors’ Resource Box. Instead, you should try to get the reader to your website, where you have an unlimited number of words, videos, pictures and testimonials to tell the real story of your products or services. Few vendors have the ability to sell a product or service in 500 characters, so you should use your Authors’ Resource Box to get the reader to your website, where you will do the real selling…
