Understanding The Durability of Cork Flooring

Durability is always a huge concern for every person when it comes to flooring. This is because the type of flooring one ends up using in the house must be able to serve for the longest time possible. Cork flooring is one of the options that you can put up for consideration all the time. It is affordable as well as durable. Unfortunately, very many people still doubt how durable this flooring is as compared to other types in the market. This article will analyze that aspect in depth so that you can have the right understanding.

Water is a very destructive agent for floors. The good thing with cork material is that it is resistant to that so donít expect your flooring to absorb any water or liquid. This explains why the material has been used by fishermen for ages. Even high humidity and molds will not be an issue with cork material. Most of the public buildings across the world have their floors made of cork thanks to its assured durability. It is soft which means the floor will experience minimal or no sort of grinding when people walk over it. Most of the floors wear out quickly because they grind under pressure from foot traffic. Fortunately, cork flooring is immune to that.

There is always the temptation to roll chairs over the floor while in office or even your house. That can easily cause damages to the floor but none has ever been reported concerning floors made of cork. However, that does not mean you have to be careless when pushing chairs around. Do it with caution and its advisable you go for rubber wheels which are gentle and cannot scratch the flooring. Being a type of wood, cork is subject to fading with time which is normal as it becomes of age. Most of the manufacturers usually use varnish or color to protect the material from fading.

The understanding is that these two materials have UV protection which can easily cushion cork flooring from fading. They will eventually fade but it will take time unlike the unprotected ones which will fade quickly. Likewise, there are different types of finishes and adhesives used by manufacturers to protect cork material from wearing out quickly. Depending on the type of finish or adhesive you have used, it can remain on the cork forever but even for those that peel off it will take time.

Finally, you need to know that cork floors cannot suffer from dents even when subjected to heavy weights. This is all addressed in its structural design. The inner part of cork flooring is filled with air making it flexible. Cork is generally elastic and compressible thus cannot be dented.
