The Leader in You - 7 Steps to Enhance Your Spa Leadership

What is most important to you as a leader? This is one of my favorite questions. I ask it to leaders during seminars and I always get a variety of answers: From setting a good example, to being a good communicator, to helping the team, to providing great guest experiences, and the list go on. But what I don't hear often enough is: To have a successful business!

Shouldn't that be the most important thing? Without success your leadership will quickly vanish. I encourage you to make a list of what is important to you as a leader and share that list with your team during your next team meeting. Ask your team what is most important and write their responses down on a board and/or post them in the team lounge. It's a great exercise to do to remind everyone why we do what we do.

1. What is One "Problem" You Can Turn into an Opportunity?

You've heard the saying, "take lemons and make lemonade." What lemons are in your spa? How can you turn them into lemonade? Look at your problems as opportunities to enhance your skills. Problems make you stronger and allow you to grow. Don't push them under the rug and hope they go away because they won't. One question I am often asked is how do I motivate my team? One of my answers is to engage your team in problem solving. This practice makes your team feel important and makes them aware that you value their input. It will motivate them and get them focused on positive results. They'll love being part of the solution!

2. What Does My Team Need to Hear From Me?

One of the most important leadership skills is communication. Ask yourself, what if you were a team member and you had a leader like yourself, what would you think of this leader? Sometimes the way we see ourselves is not the same as what others see. Look in the mirror. Examine what messages you are sending to the team. Are you a positive leader? How well do you communicate your vision to your team? Think from your employees' point of view -- if they don't feel understood, they won't listen to you. Resist the urge to tell them how they "should" think or feel. Remember that inspiration comes from the heart!

3. As a Leader, Do You Know Your Clients' Greatest Needs?

When was the last time you did a survey to rediscover your guests' needs? Have you assessed your menu lately to see what treatments you need to stop offering and what new services you need to add to your menu? When was the last time you looked at guest comment cards? Get a focus group together and discover their pain/need. Then, offer solutions to address their specific concerns and watch your guest loyalty and success soar!

4. What New Business Relationships Should You Pursue?

The spa industry is shifting from pampering to wellness. You can make this shift much easier by establishing new business 2 business relationships. Go out and meet people who can partner with you to provide wellness programs. Seek out acupuncturists, nutritionists or dietitians, life coaches and other wellness professionals… These are the types of relationships that you should focus on so you can reposition your spa and build a new wellness business.

5. How Can You Be More Strategic?

See the big picture and get serious about setting the direction. Share the big picture with your team. Set aside time on your calendar for strategic planning. Conduct brain storming sessions and chart a path. You can't expect things to get better on their own. You have to have a road map, navigate your way, and lead the driving force to change.

6. What Leadership Skill Can You Improve?

Improve your leadership skills by Building Your Success Library. Do you have one? How often do you invest in sharpening your skills as a leader? You know the saying, "The more you learn, the more you earn!" That is a fact.

Improve your leadership skills and experience exponential growth!
