If you've decided to take on the task of hosting a party, congratulations. It's not easy especially with Christmas around the corner and everything so rushed. To help you out, you'll need certain catering supplies which can be hired from a party supplies store.
It may not seem so important but cutlery acts as table décor. Well-chosen cutlery can add style to the dining area even if there's not much else to boost the aesthetics.
Knives: Boning knives and steak knives are standard though you can go one further and add a fish knife. Opt only for silverware not only because it looks elegant but because the metal doesn't leach a weird taste when it reacts with acids like lemon juice that's usually squeezed on certain meat dishes.
Forks: There are so many types of forks it's very easy to get confused. However, the basics ones are dinner, salad, beef and fish forks. You can add a relish fork if you're serving it.
Spoons: Spoons are equally varied though there are common ones. If you don't feel like going through the hassle and cost of including special spoons, stick with tablespoons, soup spoons, teaspoons and dessert spoons.
You need glassware. There are no two ways about it. But what should you get? Like cutlery, glassware varies and there's a type for every purpose. When it comes to drinking vessels, you'll need a tumbler for all purposes, a wine glass for wine, martini glass for martinis and a flute for champagnes and sparkling wines.
If it's glass tableware you want, use dishes to hold desserts, salads, dips and baked goods. The rules are not so strict as with drinkware so you don't have to be too picky, thankfully.
As with the other two, you have your pick of crockery choices. But, you need to take greater care with the selection. Each type of crockery has a purpose which means interchanging unless unavoidable is a no-no. Take the example of bowls where a soup bowl can't be used as a dessert bowl and vice versa. The same with plates where you have lunch and dinner plates, salad and side plates and dessert plates. For a really decorative look, choose charger plates which, incidentally, must be removed before dessert is served.
Among serving dishes, there are casseroles and similar lidded dishes, platters, gravy boats, tureens, and pitchers. The list will change depending on the menu as Asian cuisine, for example, requires the use of specific crockery which may not be covered by Western tableware. You'll have to ask the party supplies store for recommendations or go online for a quick search.
Tableware aside, you can also hire cookware and even charcoal grills if you're planning a BBQ. Freezers, coolers and small refrigerators too are generally offered. Make a list of what you want and have the store check it against their stock.
Party supplies stores stock more than what are mentioned here. If money is not a problem you can go all out with heating and cooling appliances, a nostalgia-inducing jukebox machine, cocktail machine, pavilion, sound and light systems. In fact, everything you need to plan a perfect party without relying on your not-so-great party supplies stash. As mentioned, all you need is a list and a budget.
