Carditis: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

     Demystifying Carditis

Carditis is an inflammation of the heart and nearby areas. In a broader sense, the illness is further classified into pericarditis, myocarditis and endocarditis. The first one is when the pericardium is swollen and there is an acute pain in the chest. The second is due to congestive heart failure or acute throbbing in the chest and the third is caused because of a swelling in the inner layer of the heart. Any heart condition can be a problem for a patient going through the symptoms. But usually the situation is analyzed based on blood culture, stress tests, echocardiogram, etc. Once the heart specialist ascertains the cause and treatment for the problem, the patient follows the directives.

Symptoms and Causes

These illnesses are usually caused because of an unhealthy lifestyle, high cholesterol levels, routine sedentary life, bacteria or fungi etc. But there are underlying factors like congenital heart defects, muffled heart sounds and rapid chest pain at the outset which persists for hours or days. Other initial indicators are pain in the left arm, fever, weight loss, stomach upset, dull pain in the stomach region, etc. As a rule it is advisable to meet a doctor as soon as the situation gets unbearable. Many people leave things to the last moment and end up having to pay through their nose for either a bypass or stent, that is, if they even make it.

Remedial Measures

Preventive treatment methods to avoid any problem related to the heart are stressed across television channels, periodicals, the internet and the like. But there aren't many takers! Given that stress has increased due to financial woes, relationship problems, job losses, economic crises and overindulgence, more people find themselves worse for wear. Children are not spared as well. Therefore, before going the entire route of a bad lifestyle for years and then changing later, it is best to start off right from the time the child is small. For a patient who has been diagnosed with the problem, the initial diagnosis may require him / her to avail of blood thinners, based on the extent of the damage.

Post Operative Care

If there is a severe problem that requires surgery, there is no way out. Alternative medication like homeopathy and herbal remedies may work for a period of time. But if a heart transplant is required or a bypass surgery, there are no alternative cures for this. After a surgical operation, it is important never to stress the patient who has to recuperate and allow the new implant to work. Dietary changes are usually advised by the nutritionist in the healthcare facility. Taking a radical step like suddenly shifting over to a vegetarian plan when a person is a hardcore meat eater can be a difficult task. But incorporating vegetables and salads in the plan can work in the long run. Exercise is also a requirement to bring down weight gain and get the blood moving and pulsing regularly. This should be under the guidance of the doctor and it is important not to overdo it, as there can be negative reactions later. To sum up, keeping the heart neat and tidy is everyone's choice - the doctor does his/her bit, but the rest is up to the patient who needs to follow all the instructions to the tee.
