A Guide To Choosing The Ideal Archery Bows

Choosing the right archery bows may be a personal choice, but also a very important one. A number of factors come into play. The good news is that there are various different bows out there for archers to choose from. Selecting the right archery bow greatly increases the archer's comfort while shooting, as well as the accuracy. Below is a guide to choosing the ideal archery bows.

The correct bow for an archer should have the ideal draw length and draw weight. This means that it will be able to draw back just far enough, with the sufficient amount of tension. Most shops dealing with archery equipment will be able to take a buyer's measurements and determine his or her ideal draw length. The recommended draw length is one that the archer can draw back and hold comfortably for at least 60 seconds.

Another factor to put into consideration when selecting an archery bow is the axle-to-axle (ATA) length of the bow. The ATA is the distance between the points in which the bow's two respective cams are attached. Generally, bows having longer ATA's are considered easier to draw and more forgiving. However, it is worth bearing in mind that when hunting, the shooter will not always have a lot of space available.

Whether an archer goes for a single cam, a dual cam or a hybrid cam style bow will depend on his or her style of shooting. While single cam bows tend to draw more smoothly, dual cams are usually faster. On the other hand, hybrid cams offer a combination of the two, although they are relatively new to the market.

While the process of identifying the ideal archery bow size only takes a few moments, some archers feel like it is rocket science. In the real sense, it only takes about ten minutes to educate oneself on how to determine the right bow size. The bottom line is that the chosen archery bow must be properly sized for the shooter; otherwise the shooting experience will end up being frustrating, physically painful and an expensive loss. By taking time to learn how to choose the right bow size, an archer will have a positive shooting experience while enjoying countless hours of satisfaction.

There are a number of archery myths that individuals should be aware of when selecting bows. One of them involves bow-size charts based on height suggesting that the arm span is equal to height. The truth is that there is no evidence that supports this claim. If a test is carried out on three people of similar height whereby their arm-spans are measured, most likely the results will be three different figures. Using a height-based chart does not always yield desirable results.

Another misleading myth is that it is possible to determine the proper bow size by age. Nothing could be more wrong than this one. All human beings are not created equal in size and every individual grows at a different rate. The proper bow size is as unique to the archer as a pair of shoes. There is no proof whatsoever that arm span is proportional to age.
